[about]

hypertext is a non-linear repository of fiction and poetry. inspired by the early conceptualizations of the internet, it was created to challenge traditional notions of form, authorship, structure and completeness. it’s also a place for writers to connect with one another and build something bigger than the work of an individual.

the project takes inspiration from [musical sampling], [exquisite corpses], [Wikipedia], the floppy-disc hyperfictions of [Eastgate Systems], Espen J. Aarseth‘s concept of [ergodic literature], the [hyphae] of mycorrhizal fungi, Nathalie Saurraute’s [tropisms], Jorge Luis Borges’s [The Garden of Forking Paths], Georges Perec and the Oulipos’ [Winter Journeys], and the [samizdat literature] of the Soviet underground.

[submission guidelines]

hypertext is better when we do it together. we encourage you to [share your work] in keeping with our submission guidelines:

1. the platform itself is a non-proprietary space for the interaction of text. all work published on the hypertext project platform remains the intellectual property of the person who wrote it.

2. new work arrives when it is linked to existing lexia through a word, phrase, or sentence. the line they share in common must be verbatim since it serves as a hyperlink, connecting both lexia through a stable, two-way connection.

3. the hypertext network is a living, non-static space. while contributors retain all rights to their work, including a final say over the published version, that version may change from time to time, including domain switches or the tweaking of lines to better produce hyperlinks. in such instances, we will contact you first for permission.

4. the project encourages new and original writing. while we accept old writing, including work previously published on other platforms (with author’s permission), the process works best when it’s responsive to what already exists in the network. we can work with you to try and create/tweak lines in the existing lexia to create hyperlinks that lend themselves to your writing, but ideally there should be a line or phrase in your work that already stands in common with the existing text.

5. hypertext is best shared among peers, without money changing hands. linking with us is not meant to deter anyone’s ability to publish on an more established/proprietary platform. as traditional publishers typically refuse to publish work that previously exists elsewhere, please contact us if you plan to submit or publish your lexia in another place.

6. there is no word limit or formal constraint at this time.

the best way to write hypertext is to [read some of it first]. that way, you can find the line you’d like to link to.

at that point, [submit]!
